What Are Dot Phrases by Voice?

William W. Bridge, M.D. — board-certified physician and medical director · 1 min read

You say "dot" and the phrase's name in the middle of a sentence, and Chartside drops in the saved text and keeps listening. No switching to the keyboard to type a SmartPhrase between dictated sentences.

The Glass Island, a rounded glass pill with a teal microphone and waveform, floating over faint lines of a note.

Why bother with phrases by voice?

Because the keyboard trip is the slow part. Physicians in one 2017 study spent more than half their workday in the EHR (Annals of Family Medicine, 2017). Much of that is text you have written a hundred times: a review of systems, discharge instructions, a fall-precautions line.

How does it work in Chartside?

Mid-dictation, say "dot ros" and keep talking. The saved text lands where you said it, and the sentence after it follows. Typed works too: ".ros" and a space. The Dot Phrase Library shows the match above the Glass Island so you can see what is about to land.

Can I bring my SmartPhrases?

Yes. Drop the document into the .Library and they import. Then it is the same phrases, said instead of typed.

The full dictation flow is on the medical speech to text page, and the evening it gives back is in why am I still finishing notes at home. Founding Members lock their price for life; details on the Founding Member page.
